I was at about the 36th level of the fire caverns when I saved the game and used a portal to get back to town. When I went back to the dungeon entrance, the game had taken me all the way to the beginning... there's a portal outside, but it only leads to the 1st dungeon!
I just stopped playing on that particular dungeon, and am working on the other two instead.
